Wet Wood Conservation Colloquium

“4.000 Years of Pile Dwellings” is the title of the major exhibition 2016 in the Monastery Bad Schussenried under the auspices of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Exciting organic finds from waterlogged Neolithic and Bronze Age sites will be on display for the first time. Their conservation was a challenge.
That’s why we chose Wet Wood Conservation as the next theme for our colloquium. The Stuttgart Conservation Colloquia are an annual series of international short conferences on varying themes. It was started in 2005 by the Objects‘ Conservation Programme of the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. The aim is to bring together up-to-date information on conservation research, be it from Stuttgart, the whole of Germany or abroad. It emphasizes discussion and exchange among conservators and conservation scientists.
For the first time, the colloquium will not be held in Stuttgart but in the Baroque Monastery of Bad Schussenried, close to the exhibition rooms for the Neolithic finds. Bronze Age finds in the Federseemuseum Bad Buchau and actual excavations of archaeological pile-dwelling sites will also be visited.
The prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps have been registered as UNESCO World Heritage in 2011.
